Most tourists spend their first few nights in Apia before heading off to the beaches. Upolu Island has some classic beach locations, most with a turquoise lagoon with good swimming and snorkelling. There are a couple of upmarket beach resorts and plenty of traditional beach bungalows. Upolu Island has some spectacular scenery with both lush tropical mountains abundant with waterfalls and breathtaking coastal views. Many sites are close to the main coastal highway and are ideal for day tours Five Islands view from Apai Point, one of the Samoa's many breathtaking coastal views. Savaii is an active volcanic island with some unusual scenery including blowholes, sea arches and black sand beaches. This lava flow was the latest in a continual build up of Savaii that lasted from 1905-1911 and buried the old village. The stunning blowholes at Alofaaga where tour guides shoot coconuts 30 metres into the air using the blowhole as a propeller. Savaii is a great island for sightseeing. Savaii has only a couple of hotels. Most accommodation is offered in traditional beach fales which can be found in stunning locations around the island including the popular beach setting at Manase which has good snorkelling. Pago Pago is the capital town of American Samoa and is set in a beautiful deep water harbour hemmed in by tall mountains. Unfortunately the harbour is still plagued by pollution from the nearby Tuna cannery factories. Tutuila Island has some breathtaking coastal scenery and much of the land is protected under the US National Park Scheme. Unfortunately there are few walking trails to explore this beautiful coastline. Several attractive beaches can be found around the islands but tourism in American Samoa is extremely low key and there are no beach resorts in the entire country. Most accommodation is motel or inn style catering to businessmen. The outer islands of the Manu'a Group are almost entirely National Park and are surrounded by gorgeous beaches. There are several important archaeological sites here but only a few basic guesthouses.
