The island has few beaches and little to entice the overseas tourist except for its beautiful capital city, Noumea. Grand Terre has a mountainous landscape with cattle farms along the west coast, Nikel mining in the centre and tropical rainforest and tribal villages along the east coast Noumea is a pretty town set along a series of bays, some filled with yachts and others with sandy beaches and high rise hotels. With a lively nightlife, casinos and excellent French restaurants, Noumea is one of the country's main tourist attractions. The beach at Anse Vata, ten minutes drive from downtown Noumea, is the holiday accommodation centre for the capital and the only South Pacific town boasting a picturesque sandy beach with swimming lagoon. The Isle of Pines is the main beach holiday destination for tourists visiting New Caledonia with a handful of resorts from luxury to budget. Named after its towering pine trees which cover the island and coast, The Isle of Pines offers a laid back holiday atmosphere with good snorkelling and scuba diving and several excellent day cruises to secluded bays and uninhabited islets surrounding the lagoon. Lifou is the largest of the Loyalty Islands. The island is well developped by South Pacific standards with sealed roads, electricty and garbage collection to all villages. There's a supermarket and marina at We, the administrative centre of the islands. Lifou has a handful of small boutique resorts and tribal village accommodation alongside beautiful secluded white sand beaches, although there are few water activities except for snorkelling. There are a handful of daily flights from Noumea taking 30 minutes. Mare, like its neighbouring Loyalty Island, Lifou, is an uplifted limestone island with a rugged and craggy coastline puntuated by cove beaches and littered with caves, sink holes and unusual inland cliffs. Mare has several delightful fine white sand beaches fronting sublime turquoise lagoons but only one small boutique resort to stay at.
