The main island of Rarotonga has over 80% of the islands tourism with the remainder visiting the lagoon atoll of Aitutaki, a 40-minute flight to the north. Rarotonga has a handful of medium size beach resorts and lots of locally owned and operated beach bungalow accommodation. Cook Islands Picture Tour Fiji is the most visited of the South Pacific islands with over 500,000 tourists arriving annually and having over 100 beach resorts from large hotel chains to intimate beach huts. The islands have an enviable mix of beautiful coral islands, secluded beaches, luxury cruises, traditional villages, virgin rainforests, world famous scuba diving and a thriving backpacker trail. The international airport is at Nadi on the main island of Viti Levu which makes a great base for sightseeing. The most popular tourist regions are the Mamanuca Islands appealing to families and water sport lovers, and the Yasawa Islands appealing more to travellers and upmarket romantics. Fiji Picture Tour Tonga, the only remaining Kingdom in the South Pacific, is a beautiful collection of small islands with rich archaeological sites and a very traditional culture. The islands are renowned as the best place in the South Pacific for both whale watching and sailing although tourism remains very low key. There are just a handful of boutique resorts, some on secluded beaches, others accupying tiny uninhabited islands. Tonga Picture Tour Samoa is a down to earth holiday destination with just a handful of beach resorts and lots of traditional hut accommodation known as beach fales. The two main islands of Upolu and Savaii offer good sightseeing with blowholes, lava fields and waterfalls as well as the charming seaside town of Apia where Robert Louis Stevenson spent the last years of his life. Neighbouring American Samoa has little tourist infrastructure and a less traditional lifestyle. Samoa Picture Tour Vanuatu is one of the best South Pacific destinations to experience a rich and diverse traditional culture. The islands also boast the world's most accessible wreck dive (on Espiritu Santo) and the world's most accessible active volcano (on Tanna). The majority of holiday resorts and located around Port Vila. Vanuatu Picture Tour New Caledonia is a French Territory with several outstanding beaches, the sophisticated seaside town of Noumea and several stunning beach destinations. It makes a great holiday for those looking to experience the Mediterranean atmosphere with a blend of the unique hospitality of the South Pacific. New Caledonia Picture Tour French Polynesia, better known from the name of its main island, Tahiti, offers a truely romantic atmosphere with inspiration from French Mediterranean lifestyle. With exquisite over the water bungalows, great snorkelling and stunning mountain scenery, Tahiti is the most expensive South Pacific destination to visit. The islands of most appeal are the stunning lagoon island of Bora Bora, and the rather more down to earth Moorea. The nine tiny islands of Tuvalu are typically low-lying atolls slowly being engulfed by the sea. The largest atoll, Funafati, supports half the population of 10,000 and is not particulalry fertile making the islandersa reliant on fishing. French Polynesia Picture Tour Hawaii is epitomised by the electric beach scene of Waikiki Beach, but it also has some dramatic scenery including snow capped mountains, active volcanoes inpenetrable rainforest and barren canyons. The islands also boast several exceptional historical sites. Above all else, Hawaii offers a first class tourist infrastructure with excellent hotels, hundreds of golf courses, and plenty of restaurants, shops and organized sightseeing tours. Hawaii Islands Picture Tour Tokelau is a collection of three tiny atolls, each with about 500 people. The islands lie almost 500km north of Samoa, its closest neighbour. There is no airstrip so the 100 or so tourists that arrive each year do so by boat from Samoa. The volatile Solomon Islands has virtually no commercial tourism and many areas are still regarded dangerous for travellers. The islands offer great adventure with very traditional culture and some of the best dive sites in the world. The thousands of tiny islands that make up Micronesia offer a mix of large resorts catering to mostly Japanese and American tourists and remote islands like Yap where traditions remain very strong The 33 tiny atolls of the Kiribati span 3.5 million sq km of ocean. The main island of Tarawa Atoll is unusually overcrowded and polluted. To the far east is Christmas Island, the largest Coral Island in the world with fine bone fishing.
