Viti Levu is the main Fiji Island and on the sunny western side of Viti Levu is Nadi International Airport. There are several beach resort areas in Nadi and tourist attractions include the surrounding mountains and offshore islands making it an excellent base for a holiday. Another great day tour is a visit to stunning Navala Village which has over 200 bures (houses) made entirely from traditional materials. There are a dozen large beach resorts along the Coral Coast between 1 and 2 hours drive from the airport and these are popular with families and those looking to explore the rainforest and rivers on day trips. The interior is both stunning and remote. Here you'll find some of the most traditional villages in Fiji and stunning mountain views. Most inland roads require 4-Wheel Drive and a local guide is recommended. Suva is a vibrant cosmopolitan city with exciting bars and nightclubs but has no beaches, high rainfall and petty crime making it disappointing choice for tourists. The Mamanucas is the most popular beach resort destination in Fiji with most of the small islands having a resort. Snorkelling and diving is excellent and there are plenty of other water activities and cruises. The Mamanucas has about 30 islands in all, many of which are tiny coral islands. Some have resorts, others are day trip islands for tourists staying in Nadi. The Yasawas offer several small luxury resorts and lots of low key budget resorts. Here are Fiji's best beaches alongside shallow protected lagoons ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The island of Tavewa was the original backpacker destination in the Yasawas. There are now over twenty small beach resorts along this chain of 12 islands, with great snorkelling, kayaking and small fishing villages. The traditional fishing villages along the Yasawa chain of islands make exceptional day trips. The high islands have good walking trails through grasslands with stunning views but little forest cover. Kadavu, the largest of the Southern islands, is very rugged with several steep mountains and a rocky meandering coastline. Scuba diving and surfing is excellent and there are some good trails to waterfalls and lookouts. There are only a handful places to stay in the Southern Group with several budget resorts on Kadavu and specialist dive centres and game fishing resorts. The Northern Islands is the ideal tropical adventure destination with lush rain forest, protected bays and hidden beaches. There's a good mix of small luxury resorts and budget bungalows. Taveuni, the Garden island of Fiji, has National Parks, walking trails, endemic birds and lots of waterfalls to cool off in. This is a great destination for sightseeing. The Rainbow Reef and other northern coral reefs are renowned as having the best soft corals in the world. Marine life is rich too and there is good snorkelling off the coast. View over Savusavu Town and the protected natural marina. Savusavu is a popular destination during the yachting months from May to October. There are good hikes and forests nearby Levuka Town, the old capital of Fiji until 1882 when the capital moved to Suva. Levuka retains many aspects of its colonial past. There are a few guesthouses here and the island has some good hikes. Women from the island of Kabara perform a distinctly Lauan sitting dance. Lauans are closely related to the Polynesians of Tonga but the islands have only a few guesthouses and are rarely visited by tourists. The remote Polynesian island of Rotuma has some of the most picturesque beaches in the South Pacific and a very traditional lifestyle, although no tourist accommodation.
